Uncanny X-Men Paper Toys

Paper toy designer Luis Renato Kriegel has created a super cool set of X-Men paper toys based Brian Castleforte's Headkase paper toy template. Pictured above (left to right) are paper toys of Cyclops, Emma Frost (White Queen), Beast, Wolverine, Colossus, Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat) and the alien dragon, Lockheed. Printable templates of each character are available in the "Free Papertoys" section of Kriegel's website. Scroll through the images to get to the goods.

Thor Movie Papercraft: Mjolnir

In Marvel Comics' new Thor movie, the god of thunder's war hammer Mjolnir is given a more ornate look than the comic book version of the weapon. My friend George at the Behold the Geek! blog took it upon himself to create a full scale paper model of the movie version of the hammer. George based the construction of his hammer on my own 1:1 scale Mjolnir papercraft. The template for the movie Mjolnir is available here. Note: 11x17 size paper or cardstock is required to build the hammer full size.

Full Scale Thor Hammer Papercraft

Ever since I released a 1/2 scale Mjolnir paper model back in 2008 I have gotten requests to make a full scale version of the hammer. So to celebrate the release of the new Thor movie this week, I am finally honoring those requests and releasing a 1:1 scale version of my original Thor hammer papercraft. When I created the original model I attempted to make it the "official" size according to Marvel Comics. The full scale model may seem a little large at 21" (53 cm) long, but you have to remember that this is the weapon of a 6'-6" (2 m) tall, 650 lb (295 Kg) Norse god. ^^ The full size template for Mjolnir may be downloaded here.

Marvel Comics Papercraft: Thor

With a new Thor movie coming out later this year, it was only a matter of time before someone created a papercraft of Marvel Comics' god of thunder. This large paper model is based on a 3D model from the Marvel Ultimate Alliance video game and stands at a little over 21 inches (54 cm) tall. The designer and builder of the model is Mariano DG from imprime-recorta-pega.com. Over the past year Mariano has produced several other excellent papercraft models of Marvel Comics characters. I look forward to seeing more from him this year. A download which includes both PDF and PDO format templates for the Thor model is available here.

Iron Man Helmet Paper Model

The 2008 Iron Man movie has inspired a lot of great papercraft and here is another one to add to the list. This full size Iron Man helmet was created by a Texas papercrafter known online only as "DungBeetle". In addition to this movie accurate helmet, DungBeetle is also working on some 1:1 scale armor, but as of yet the helmet is the only piece to which color has been added. A free download of the helmet template (Pepakura PDO format only) is available here.

UPDATE 10/19/2010:
DungBeetle has apparently taken down his blog. An alternate download of the helmet in PDF format is available here.

Marvel Comics Papercraft: Galactus Cubee

Another one of those fantastic comic book characters created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, Galactus is a giant being described in the pages of one Marvel comic book as "the most awesome living entity in the cosmos". To befit Galactus' titanic stature, deviantART member Viper005 has created a king size custom Cubee papercraft which is greater than twice the size of a usual Cubee (see the blank normal size Cubee in the photo for comparison). The two page template for this Galactus Cubee may be found here.

Marvel Comics Papercraft: X-Men

I stumbled onto a fledgling papercraft blog called My Paper Heroes (run by UK papercrafter Xavier Leo Gale-Sides) and I was delighted to find numerous X-Men papercraft. Pictured above are Rogue, Emma Frost, Psylocke, Professor Xavier, Beast, and Havok. Other X-Men characters available for download include Angel, Cyclops, Colossus, Archangel, Wolverine, Iceman, Cannonball, and Jamie Madrox. And as if that wasn't enough, there are also models of the Incredible Hulk and the Silver Surfer. Look for more Marvel Comics papercraft in the future from Gale-Sides. His blog is located here.

Ghost Rider Hako Papercraft

You don't see a whole lot of papercraft of Marvel Comics' Ghost Rider around. That's probably because it's tough to do all the flames. ^^ Joe Apodaca, however, has managed to do a pretty good job with this hako version of the Spirit of Vengeance. He gets a gold star for including a chain, too. ^^ The motorcycle and the figure are two separate models. Templates are available here.

Marvel Papercraft: Captain America's Shield

I was a little bummed two years ago when Marvel Comics killed off the original Captain America, Steve Rogers. However, as you may know, this month Marvel is bringing Rogers back in a five issue limited series entitled Captain America: Reborn. To celebrate, I did a recolor of my Tron Disc template to create a papercraft model that represents the good Captain's shield set in a stone base. Hope you enjoy it.

Marvel Papercraft: Human Torch Mask

Comic Book Character Mask Series - Part 5
It has been a while, but I have finally finished another Marvel Comics mask. In the unlikely case you aren't familiar with the subject of this mask, the
Human Torch (Johnny Storm) is a superhero with fire powers who is a member of the Fantastic Four. The inspiration for this mask came from the Torch's appearance on the cover of Fantastic Four #233. Template information for the mask is as follows:

Scales: 1:1 & 1:2 (approximately)
Finished Sizes:
Full Size - 6"(15.2 cm) x 9.75"(24.8 cm) x 1.5"(3.8 cm)
Half Size - 3"(7.6 cm) x 4.9"(12.4 cm) x 0.75"(1.9 cm)
Number of sheets: 3 or 2 depending on size
Number of parts: 14

Iron Man Origami

These two Iron Man origami pieces were designed by origami artist Brian Chan in 2008. Each was folded from a single square of paper. To give you an idea of the scale, the mask is about the size of the palm of your hand. If you would like to give either one of these pieces a try, Brian has graciously provided folding diagrams here.

Marvel Papercraft - Silver Surfer Mask

Comic Book Character Mask Series - Part 4
Here is another Marvel Comics entry in my ongoing comic book mask series. I modeled the Silver Surfer texture for this one after Jack Kirby's artwork on the cover of Fantastic Four #50.

Difficulty: 3/5
Download:
Here

One thing I did different with this mask compared to previous masks is that I put the texture of the mask on the optional back cover of the mask rather than leaving the back cover blank. That way the back cover of the full size mask is almost large enough to be used as a flat mask by itself.

Marvel Papercraft - Deadpool Mask

Comic Book Character Mask Series - Part 3
Here is my latest entry in the ongoing comic book character mask series. Deadpool is a Marvel Comics character who is a high tech mercenary implanted with a healing factor extracted from the X-Men's Wolverine. Deadpool has appeared as a character in two recent movies from Marvel Entertainment: X-Men Origins: Wolverine and the straight to video, Hulk Vs. Marvel is also currently offering on their website a free digital comic book titled Deadpool Saga which outlines the history of the character. Template information for the mask is as follows:

Scales: 1:1 & 1:2 (approximately)
Finished Sizes:
Full Size - 6"(15.2 cm) x 9.75"(24.8 cm) x 1.5"(3.8 cm)
Half Size - 3"(7.6 cm) x 4.9"(12.4 cm) x 0.75"(1.9 cm)

Marvel Papercraft - Carnage Mask

Comic Book Character Mask Series - Part 2
As I mentioned last week in my Spider-Man mask post, I have decided to attempt a series of comic book character masks based on re-colors of my Kaonashi Mask template. I am considering the Spider-Man mask to be the first in the series. This mask of Spidey's enemy, Carnage, is part two. Carnage, in a nutshell, is a human serial killer who is symbiotically bonded to a malevolent alien entity. Back in the day, Carnage was popular enough to have starred in his own video game, Maximum Carnage. Template information for the mask is as follows:

Template Info
Scales: 1:1 & 1:2 (approximately)
Finished Sizes:
Full Size - 6"(15.2 cm) x 9.75"(24.8 cm) x 1.5"(3.8 cm)
Half Size - 3"(7.6 cm) x 4.9"(12.4 cm) x 0.75"(1.9 cm)
Number of sheets: 3 or 2 depending on size
Number of parts: 14
Difficulty: 3/5
Download: Here

I am not sure how far I will be able to take this mask series as not just any character will look right with the shape of the mask, but I have at least four more characters in mind that I think will work. I also originally thought I would do only Marvel Comics characters, but have since thought of a couple of non-Marvel characters I would like to try as well.

Update 7/23/09
Other comic book character masks are available:
Human Torch
Carnage
Deadpool
Silver Surfer

Marvel Papercraft - Spider-Man Mask

I got to looking at the Kaonashi Mask papercraft I did back in January and it occurred to me that the shape of the mask was pretty close to the shape of Spider-Man's mask. As an experiment, I re-colored the Kaonashi template. I was pleased with the result, so I thought I would post it for download. While the mask is full sized and can be worn (you are on your own in figuring out where to cut the eye holes!), I suspect that most people who build this will use it as more of a decorative object. With that in mind, I added to the template an optional cover to enclose the back and to provide extra support to help the mask keep its shape. I have also included two PDF templates in the download, one for a full size mask and one for a miniature mask. Look for more Marvel masks in the future! The template info for the Spider-Man mask is as follows:

Marvel Papercraft - Eye of Agamotto

In the Marvel Comics universe perhaps no hero wields greater magical powers than Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme. Doctor Strange possesses numerous magical artifacts which he uses to amplify his power, but there are only two he keeps on his person at all times. One is the Cloak of Levitation wrapped around his shoulders and the other is the Eye of Agamotto fastened at his throat. In this papercraft design I created two versions of the Eye of Agamotto to reflect the varying ways the amulet has been portrayed by different comic book artists over the years. In some cases artists have portrayed the amulet as an open golden eye, but more often as not the amulet has been drawn as a closed golden eye whose lids open when its magic is activated to reveal the true "living" Eye of Agamotto inside. Template information for the papercraft model is below. The download includes PDF files of both the metallic and living versions of the Eye as well as lined and non-lined versions of each.

Scale: 1:1
Finished Size: 3.5" (8.9 cm) diameter
Number of sheets: 2
Number of parts: 14
Difficulty: 3/5

Special thanks to Israel Skelton at skeltoncrewstudio.com for permission to use the photo of his Eye of Agamotto prop in the creation of this papercraft.

Marvel Papercraft - Blink's Quiver

I have been a fan of the Marvel Comics superhero Blink since she first appeared in X-Men Alpha in 1995. Blink has the ability to create teleportation portals. She can also channel her teleportation energy into small javelins which when thrown at a target cause the target to be teleported to another location. A supply of javelins is usually carried in a quiver on her back. This papercraft is my vision of Blink's quiver. Typically the javelins in her quiver are grey, but I chose to make the javelins in this model the more recognizable brilliant pink color the javelins take on when they are charged with Blink's energy. The papercraft template info is as follows:

Marvel Papercraft - Mjolnir, Thor's Hammer

I have finished my second papercraft design! This model is of Mjolnir, the weapon of the Marvel Comics superhero Thor. The character of Thor was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and is based loosely on the god of thunder of the same name from Norse mythology. Mjolnir, among other things, enables Thor to fly, summon lightning, and create interdimensional portals. Rumor has it that a Thor movie will be released in 2010. Let's hope it will be as good as Marvel's Ironman was in 2008.

Retro Cartoon Robot Papercraft

There are two things that always make me smile: monkeys and robots. So you can expect to see builds of both in the future. :) Today the post goes to robots.

On the left is Rosie the robot maid from the early 60's American television cartoon The Jetsons . The model may look simple but it actually took some time to complete. The original template is very small, without instructions, and was not designed with any gluing tabs. I enlarged the template almost 100% and improvised my own gluing tabs to make it easier to build. The original template was designed by Phil Shore, USA, 2008 and can be found here.

On the right is H.E.R.B.I.E (Humanoid Experimental Robot, B-type, Integrated Electronics) from the 1978 Saturday morning cartoon The Fantastic Four which was based on the Marvel comic book series of the same name. The H.E.R.B.I.E character was designed by none other than comic book legend Jack Kirby who was working as a story board artist for the show at the time. After the show was canceled, H.E.R.B.I.E eventually began making appearances in the FF comic books themselves. The template for this papercraft was designed by Sean Kleefeld, USA, 1998 as part of a "fun pack" which is offered on his Fantastic Four fan site here. The original template was designed to be assembled without glue but I improvised some gluing tabs on the head and body to help the model hold its shape better.

UPDATE 05.27.2009: Unfortunately the link to H.E.R.B.I.E seems to be permanently dead. I don't think Mr. Kleefeld would mind if I posted an image of the template so that others can continue to enjoy building his creation, so here it is:
